Why avoid sulphate in shampoos?

Sulphates are harsh detergents found in most commercial shampoos. The most common sulphates are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Needless to say, sulfates are effective in cleansing the hair. They are way too effective that they strip away the natural sebum from the scalp and leave the hair dehydrated.

How to identify a sulphate free shampoo?

Sulphate-free shampoos do not have SLS or SLES in their ingredients’ list but may contain other harsh surfactants. Moreover we will have to check the ingredients list to lookup for plant-derived surfactants such as glucosides, saponin, sulfosuccinates or glutamates. These nature-derived surfactants remove dirt and grease from the hair gently yet effectively. However these surfactants may not be able to remove the hair oil which is applied as a pre wash.

Benefits of sulphate free shampoos

  • Help retain the scalp sebum – Sulphate free shampoos cleanse dirt and grime from the scalp without stripping the sebum. This way the scalp stays healthy and hydrated.
  • Helps with frizzy hair – Sulphate free shampoos gently cleanse the hair so they do not dehydrate the hair length. This might help reduce the frizz.
  • May reduce scalp irritation – Sulphate free shampoos may experience less irritation as the surfactants are not harsh. Due to SLS or SLES, the scalp can become itchy, dry or painful.
  • Retain Hair dye/colour – SLS-free shampoos are gentler so they do strip away the hair colour or dye if you apply any. This reduces the efforts to re-colour and colour looks fresh and bright.
