Dot and Key Barrier Repair Oil-Free Moisturizer Review

When Dot and Key launched the blueberry barrier repair moisturizer (non oil free version) I had immediately picked it up as I wanted to try something new from the brand. However, to my utter dismay, the moisturizer had coconut oil in it and it gave me small zits everytime I used. Later on they improved the same moisturizer and it still broke me out.

Recently when Dot and Key Barrier Repair oil free moisturizer was launched I purchased it only after checking the ingredients’ list and found out that it’s really an oil free moisturizer. I am impressed with the moisturizing and nourishing properties of this moisturizer. Read the Review to know more. I am writing this review after emptying one tube.

Packaging, Texture and Fragrance

The moisturizer is housed in a plastic, aqua blue, flip cap tube that’s easy to travel with and leak proof. The moisturizer has a gel cream texture leaning towards a creamy side. The consistency is slightly creamy but is not too thin like a runny gel. It is white in colour and fragrance free so a safe bet for even sensitive skin or broken skin barrier as well.

My experience

The moisturizer is gel cream, leaning towards creamy side. It may feel heavy after dispensing but when you apply, it feels like a gel that takes a little time to absorb. It is a non-comedogenic moisturizer with barrier repairing ingredients that make it perfect for combination to oily and acne-prone. The skin feels soft and smooth without any greasy feel after applying this moisturizer.

I like the moisturising effect that this barrier repair moisturizer has on my oily skin. Currently this is my everyday moisturizer in my AM as well as PM skincare routine. People with dry, normal skin can use another hydrating serum before using this moisturizer. However people with combination and oily skin will find this moisturizer sufficient as a standalone product and can’t be used beneath a sunscreen. This moisturizer feels good keeping in mind the upcoming winter season as skin becomes dry easily. In the summers this moisturizer may give you sweaty skin due to its moisturizing effects.

It contains ceramides that helps with the healing process, moisturizing & protecting a broken skin barrier, without feeling heavy at all on the skin. Additionally, it’s a fragrance free moisturizer which is a good thing keeping in mind sensitive skin type as well. However since the moisturizer works nicely on my skin, I wouldn’t mind repurchasing this one.

However, the moisturizer may not work good in layering method of skincare. Whenever I use a gel sunscreen after using this moisturizer, at the end of the day I feel like cleansing my skin to get rid of the heavy feel on my skin. On some occasions, I use a salicylic acid serum and then apply this moisturizer and get the same heavy feel which makes me wash off my face. The good part is that in-spite of having ceramides in it, it is lightweight enough to be used daily by oily skin but without layering of skincare.

Summing Up

The gel cream texture looks heavy but perfumes like a gel upon application. The Dot and Key Blueberry oil free moisturizer will provide your skin with a good moisturising effect and will absorb quickly. It makes the skin smooth, soft without feeling heavy or greasy. Finding a good ceramide moisturizer that suits oily, acne prone skin is no longer a task since this is best suited to be used on a daily basis. Moreover, it can be a good addition to any skincare routine even if you are into chemical exfoliation, double cleansing and are looking for a simple, no fuss moisturizer for your skin. However, please remember you may or may not enjoy using this moisturizer while layering skincare products.
